Dear Mr. Deffinbaugh
I read some of an article of yours that was posted online. There is a question I’ve been pondering. I am not on the verge of a crisis but would like your opinion.
“If a person commits suicide, do they go to hell?” You stated that the Catholic Church believes this is so but I just read an article and that’s what they believe is purgatory. People can be prayed for and get a second chance. That’s not quite the way they put it, but anyway...
Whether you serve a Christian ministry (a church, a para-church ministry, a mission agency) or whether you’re a leader in a secular organization, you probably have a leadership role, at some level, in that organization. Indeed, I would argue that everyone to some degree is a leader in that we all influence others in some way. For just under 20 years, I served in ministry as a bi-vocational pastor while at the same time working in a business management capacity.
We talk about ministry as though it is self-evident what that term means and implies. As a general statement, we could say that Christian ministry is the activity and responsibility of the local church in the fulfillment of its biblically defined mandate in the world.
When discussing the topic of the philosophy of church leadership, we must understand first and foremost that we don’t make this up. We don’t sit down and try to put together our own philosophy or mission. Rather, we seek to follow the mandate for the church and its leaders as set out in the Scriptures.

I have a question about this verse. John 1:18 “No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him.” It says that no one has seen God—- at any time. Well, if souls are in heaven, then surely they would be able to see the Father in his full glory.
Let me begin by affirming, from the Scriptures, that Israel, as a nation, not only rejected Jesus as their Messiah; they continue to reject Jesus as their Messiah to this day.
