The Athanasian Creed: Third Month—Day 8

18. And yet not three Lords, but one Lord.

Scripture

The Lord of hosts is wonderful in counsel and great in wisdom.
You are the Lord,
And there is no savior besides You.
From ancient days You are He,
And no one can deliver out of Your hand;
You act, and who can reverse it? (Isaiah 28:29; 43:11, 13)

19-20. For like as we are compelled by the Christian verity, to acknowledge every Person by Himself to be God and Lord, so we are forbidden by the catholic religion to say there are three Gods, or three Lords.

22. The Son is of the Father alone; not made, nor created, but begotten.

24. So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits.

The foremost commandment is this: “Hear, O Israel; the Lord our God, the Lord is one; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” The second is this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” There is no commandment greater than these. 25-26. And in this Trinity none is before, or after another; none is greater, or less than another. But the whole three Persons are coeternal, and coequal.

29. Furthermore it is necessary to everlasting salvation, that he also believe faithfully the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
