  • 33. La Différence Entre Légalité et Moralité (Genèse 31:17-55)

    Introduction

  • 2. Is There a Man in the House? (Genesis 12:1)

The modern American man is a man among men. Now this has always been the case right down from colonial days until now. In colonial days the American man was a man of conviction, willing to leave his roots, take his family, move to a new, wild, untamed country and there establish a society that would be focused on his beliefs about God.

  • 1. Is There a Man in the House? (Genesis 11-18)

Sometime ago I heard about a seminary student who had graduated, and he was an unusual seminary student in that rather few of the people who graduate from seminary really have multiple job opportunities. Most of the time we scratch and scramble. I had to go find my own. I actually had to start a church to get a job. So life was a little bleak there for a while for me. But this student had multiple opportunities and one of them, the one that really, really intrigued him was the one that he discovered a venerable elder that led this particular church.

  • 3. Higher Than the Angels (Hebrews 1:4-14)

1 After God spoke long ago in various portions and in various ways to our ancestors through the prophets, 2 in these last days he has spoken to us in a son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he created the world. 3 The Son is the radiance of his glory and the representation of his essence, and he sustains all things by his powerful word, and so when he had accomplished cleansing for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. 4 Thus he became so far better than the angels as he has inherited a name superior to theirs.

  • 32. Jacob Reçoit les Chèvres de Laban (Genèse 30:25–31:16)

    Introduction

  • What studies in Scripture would you recommend to prison inmates?

Thanks for your note.  I really enjoyed the years that I conducted in-prison seminars for Prison Fellowship.  I found that the story of Joseph (from about Genesis 37 through chapter 45) to be powerful with those “inside.”  At the outset they identify with Joseph, who has been wrongly imprisoned.  Toward the end they see that they identify more closely with Judah (the one through whom Messiah would come, who needed to repent, and did.  From Joseph they come to see what true forgiveness looks like.

  • Romans 8:18 and 1Pet chapter 4 seem to imply Christians should rejoice in our suffering because of the sympathy towards the suffering of Jesus, and some how that is related to Glory. When Christians suffer how is that immediately glorious?

The suffering I have experienced does not compare to what you have described. The problem of pain is one that requires much more than a glib response.

Indeed, the answer is probably the content of a book -- one I may get around to in time. Having said this, let me suggest a few categories and Scriptures (which will probably become chapters in time to come) to which you may wish to direct your thoughts. I will also link sermons where these are available.

  • 9. Closing Thoughts

Faith is how we begin the Christian life, and it sustains us throughout. As believers in Christ, we are not given the option as to how we should walk. It is clearly stated in 2 Corinthians 5:7, “for we walk by faith, not by sight.” And in Colossians 2:6, “As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord (by faith), so walk in Him (by faith).” So what effect does living by faith have on your life? For me, it deepens my walk with God because I have to depend on Him, not myself.

  • 8. Joseph: The Man with a Divine Purpose

Joseph had a lot of things going his way in life at first. He was handsome. He was the first son born to Jacob through Rachel, and therefore, he was his father’s favorite son. He had great dreams that made him feel good about himself. But then one day his entire life changed. Can you imagine how it must have felt to know your brothers hated you so much that they would sell you out of their lives? He was forced to leave the comfortable life he had known, full of love from his parents, and go forth into the unknown. How frightening that must have been for a boy of 17.

  • 7. Jacob, The Man Who Finished Strong

If I were going to pick men and women to help carry out an enormous promise, would I choose men who were liars, who were willing to deceive those closest to them, who were self-centered? I think not. However, strangely enough, that’s exactly what God did. He reminds us that His ways are not our ways. He has different reasoning in choosing men through whom He would carry out His promise to Abraham. I admit that I don’t understand God’s thinking, but I am so thankful that He did choose imperfect men and women to fulfill His plan.
