Where the world comes to study the Bible

3. The Habits of the life

Related Media

Abstract

"Widespread transformation of character through wisely disciplined discipleship to Christ can transform our world. It can disarm the structural evils that have always dominated humankind and now threathen to destroy the world."

Dallas Willard

Spiritual exercise works much like physical exercise. The theme that dominates this entire discussion of transformation is the necessity of training. Trying to be Godly without training can be just as injurious to the spirit as trying to run seven miles without proper training can be to the body. Disciples should stop trying to be godly and start practicing the disciplines that form a pathway to the heart of God and transform us into his likeness.  God has hard wired us to live by habit. When the habits of Jesus become part of his people, we will be able to do what needs to be done, when it needs to be done, as it needs to be done.

4. The Inner Workings of the life

Related Media

Abstract

“ Many churched people have a spiritual life that’s like a car, sputtering down the highway, coughing and jerking , red engine lights flashing. The driver’s solution is to beat a fist on the dashboard until the warning lights quit flashing. He or she motors on, believing that eliminating the warning signs is the same as fixing the problem. This is how most Christians are taught to treat the spiritual predicaments in which they find themselves……. Try harder, read the bible more, pound on the spiritual dashboard until the warning lights cease. Something is wrong with the engine-the machinery of faith, the inner workings are seriously impaired.”[1]

What is under the hood? What does my spiritual engine look like? Non discipleship Christianity is sputtering along the road and the warning lights are on. The main warning light reads, “lack of character.” This lack is the primary reason for the superficial nature of today’s believers. It is painfully obvious that we have over looked the single most important element for fulfilling the Great Commission. It seems we have been so busy trying to reach the world that there has been little time to focus on becoming like Jesus.

5. The Mind and the life

Related Media

Abstract

“Coming to grips with the post-Christian mind will not exercise the brain in the  way it was exercised in defining the Christian mind. For there is no fixed body of opinion, no homogeneous set of principles, no philosophical rationale informing that amorphous accumulation of half-truths on which the popular mind is fed by the media today……. It would be mistake to look for a system of coherence …….. It would be like looking for signposts in the jungle….. The distinction between the Christian mind and the post –Christian mind is the difference between civilization an the jungle.”[1]

There is no doubt that the need for transformed minds has never been greater. There was a time when most of society held a fixed body of opinion to be true. There was a solid moral base for right and wrong. You could sit down with a Jew, a Muslim, a Christian, a Mormon, even an agnostic and find basic moral agreement. The philosophical jungle Blamires speaks of is where we now reside. There has been a multiplication in  ports of origin form which people start the journey to truth, but the desired destination has not changed, that being the mind of Christ. What did Jesus believe, think, feel and imagine? These are the vital areas of inquiry considered.

6. Relationships and the life

Related Media

Abstract

Simone Weil quipped about the church, “ I would rather die for it than join it.” Like many of us we love the idea of the church, but the practice of it often is messy, ugly, and hurtful. As much as we want to form our spiritual lives in peaceful isolation, it can’t be done apart from the contorting pressures of living with others. Missionary statesman Lesslie Newbigin put it this way, “ The greatest hermeneutic of the gospel is a community that seeks to live by it.” Jesus put it even more simply, “ Love one another, by this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” After all, the body of Christ is the manifestation of His person on this earth. And spiritually is not primarily philosophical or theoretical, it is local and ordinary. It is about being like Jesus in relation to others. Jesus was man for others, we then are to be people for others. Character is formed in community, it is tested in isolation. The most important question that must be asked and answered for every disciple to those around him is, “Can I trust me with you.” You can be second person singular, but it finally must be plural as well. When I humble myself and submit to others who can be trusted, then I have the opportunity to changed from stem to stern. I can actually begin to think like Jesus thought, feel what Jesus felt, and to see the world the way He saw it. I can actually become the kind of person who naturally does what Jesus did.

7. Submission and the life

Related Media

Abstract

Submission is not a highly sought out experience. We normally don’t dream about being one of the submissive throng gathered around a high powered leader. Our dreams are much more often about the adulation of others directed toward us.  The way of Jesus is the opposite, submission is a sign of strength and spiritual power. And if we don’t become submissive people there are at least three things that will allude us. First we won’t get our needs met; therefore, we will live as needy people trying to fill the holes in our lives. All events, good or bad, will be all about us and what we need. Second, we will lack humility, therefore, God cannot bless us. Third, we will shut out others from loving us; therefore, we will live lives of isolation with an undeveloped character. These three traits are part of the high cost of non discipleship. Submission is about love and trust, it opens to door to a rich life.

8. The Rewards of the life

Related Media

Abstract

“The Church exists for nothing else but to draw men into Christ and to make them little Christs. If they are not doing all that, all the cathedrals, clergy, missions, sermons, even the bible itself, are simply a waste of time.”

C. S. Lewis

Three things that money cannot by and no person can give you are the rewards of the choosing the life. They are characteristics that every person wants and without them, will be frustrated and filled with anxiety. Love, joy and peace are more than feelings, they are a state of being, conditions of the whole person. Normally they are accompanied by positive feelings. This is the product of transformation, this is why we can say that here is something we can give our all to. This is about a world wide character transformation that will affect others the way Jesus has already affected us.
