By this the love of God was manifested to us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. (1 John 4:9-10)

Pendahuluan (Esther)

Banyak orang Kristen menderita apa yang saya sebut “prasangka baik” Sederhananya “prasangka baik” merupakan anggapan bahwa semua orang yang kita lihat dalam Alkitab adalah “alim.” Kita segan melihat Yunus seperti orang yang tidak baik: keras kepala, sombong, pemberontak, dan (yang paling buruk) membenarkan diri. Banyak orang mencoba untuk “mensalehkan” Ester, membuat dia seorang wanita yang luar biasa iman dan kesalehannya. Saya bingung terhadap pandangan mereka. Inilah wanita yang mau tinggal diPersia dan tidur dengan raja kafir daripada kembali ke Israel dan menjadi istri orang Israel yang ada dalam Tuhan. Ester tidak pernah berdoa, dan nama Tuhan tidak pernah disebutkan diseluruh kitab. Tapi sebagian orang tetap berharap menjadikan di suri teladan. Itu suatu harapan yang begitu besar.

Saya tidak ingin berusaha membuat wanita ini kelihatan baik. Dia seorang Yahudi, seperti Yunus, dan seperti pamannya Mordekai. Wanita ini seorang yang merencanakan kejahatan dan penipu. Dia belajar banyak dari pamannya Mordekai. Mordekai menolak menghormati mereka yang berkuasa. Pertengkarannya tidak didasarkan atas kesalehan, tapi kesombongan dan keras kepala. Kitab Ester merupakan pelengkap yang baik bersama dengan kitab Ezra dan Nehemiah. Kedua kitab itu menggambarkan Yahudi yang didalam Tuhan kembali ketanah perjanjian, dibawa pemimpin yang ditunjuk ilahi. Kitab Ester menyumbangkan pengertian unik dari periode sejarah Israel. Ini menggambarkan kehidupan orang Yahudi yang tetap di Persia selama kurun waktu yang sama. Fokus kitab ini adalah tentang orang Yahudi yang sudah diperintahkan Tuhan untuk kembali ke Tanah Perjanjian tapi tidak mau kembali. Kitab ini tentang orang Yahudi yang tidak setia. Penyelamatan orang Yahudi dalam Kitab Ester tidak atas dasar kesalehan mereka, tapi hanya anugrah Tuhan, disamping dosa Israel.

Saya berdoa agar Tuhan memberi kita pikiran dan hati yang terbuka untuk melihat kitab ini dengan terang yang berbeda, mengertinya lebih baik, dan melihat aplikasinya dalam hidup kita.
