At bible.org we are excited about the upcoming Mel Gibson film, The Passion of the Christ. The passion of Jesus Christ is the climax of each of the four New Testament Gospels, and is the fulfillment of many Old Testament prophecies concerning the coming Jewish Messiah. Although this movie is a masterpiece, watching The Passion of the Christ is like starting near the end of a novel – one cannot understand the story adequately without starting at the beginning and reading it through to the last page of the final chapter. It is important to understand that the passion of our Lord was a necessity because it was promised from the earliest pages of the Old Testament. Our Lord’s death did not come upon an unsuspecting victim. He died exactly when and how He intended. After His resurrection Jesus commissioned His disciples to explain the significance of His passion to their generation and (by means of the New Testament Scriptures they penned) to ours as well. It is our desire to assist you to understand the passion of our Lord in the light of the entire Bible.
