Letters from John (part seven)
John is writing to believers who have been presented with false teachings about Jesus. Not everyone who seems to be an authority on Jesus gets it right, John says. This requires that we exercise discernment—“test the spirits”—in order to reach an accurate view of the Son of God. John appeals to his authority as an apostle who saw, heard, and touched Jesus himself. He affirms that Jesus Christ existed before His birth, and that He became fully human in His incarnation. Because those who deny these and other truths about Jesus may find their souls in grave danger, these matters have eternal importance.
