The Book of Samuel (part eleven)
Although the books of Samuel are primarily about King David, this main character isn’t introduced until halfway through 1 Samuel. And he doesn’t arrive on the scene as a heroic king with legendary stature, but as a humble shepherd boy. Decades will pass before he officially occupies Israel’s throne, but God instructs the prophet Samuel to proceed with anointing this shepherd boy as His chosen king for Israel. With the selection of David as Israel’s second human king, we learn that God measures people with different scales than we might use to measure them. Naturally, God’s choice was right, as the shepherd boy turned out to be Israel’s most celebrated king to date.
