Nehemiah 1:1-11 “O Lord God of heaven, great and awesome God, we seek to glorify You with our lives. Forgive us, O God, when we respond naturally to our circumstances. The tasks to which You’ve called us as individuals and as a church are monumentally beyond our capacity; forgive us for believing the illusion that we have the resources necessary to match them. Thank You for remaining faithful even when we prove faithless. Incline our hearts to pray before we strategize, to listen before offering shallow answers, to trust in You instead of our own perceived strength or wisdom, and to recognize the spiritual realties that transcend the physical ones that preoccupy us.”
Nehemiah 2:1-10 "Our Father, You have made everything for its purpose. Nothing happens that Your sovereign eyes don’t see. No obstacle is too big for you. Draw us into Your Word as we seek Your will, and allow us to humbly depend on You to provide for us. Forgive us for taking for granted the daily bread You faithfully supply. You own the cattle on a thousand hills. All resources in heaven and on earth are at Your disposal. When we learn of others’ needs, may we prayerfully consider how to invest the resources You’ve loaned us. When we encounter a need ourselves, may we begin in prayer and courageously make the need known. And may we never fail to return thanks when You provide again and again. Amen."
Nehemiah 2:11-20 “Dear God, You are actively involved in the affairs of our world. You are not passive. Forgive us for failing to join Your work due to our own indifference or sin. We are committed to Your work on earth. Show us the part you wish each of us to play in Your plan. We want to honor you, even if that means inconveniencing us to participate in messy ministry. Pierce our hearts to make us sensitive to Your Spirit’s tug. Open our eyes to see where Your hand is working. Prompt us to join You in building Your kingdom for Your glory. Amen.”
Nehemiah 4:1-23 1. God’s work is messy (2:11-16) 2. God’s work calls for our participation (2:17-18) 3. God’s work will be opposed (2:19-20) “Almighty God, there are many who oppose You and Your children. Remind us of the spiritual battles taking place all around us. We joyfully acknowledge that Your enemies are powerless against You. Help us to walk by faith when we experience resistance, and help us not to lean on our own strength. May resistance make us grow in righteousness. Give us strength to humbly persist when we encounter opposition. Let Your enemies see Your mighty hand and repent. Cause them to turn to You and side with us. May Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.”
Nehemiah 5:1-19 “Our Triune God, You are Three in One, demonstrating perfect unity. Thank You for modeling unity and sacrificial love. Forgive us for living with fear, greed, and self-serving agendas. Remind us daily that Jesus gave up everything for us. Give us a fresh realization of the unselfishness of our Savior, and convict us to live our lives in like manner. Convict us when we build disunity in our family and church. Teach us to release our closely-held concerns and submit them to Your will. May we preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Amen.”
Nehemiah 6:1-19 “Our Heavenly Father, You are the Creator and Sustainer of all. Your Word teaches that You provide all people with evidence for Your existence. Open our eyes to see Your goodness, and call all people into a relationship with You. We want Your glory to cover the earth as the waters cover the sea. We long to see You work, and we are humbled when You choose to use us in Your plans. Forgive us when we seek our fame instead of Yours. Remove distractions that would turn our eyes from You. Fill us with Your Spirit so that our obedience results in Your renown. We want the world to see that our God saves. Amen.”
Nehemiah 8:1-18 Psalm 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect and preserves one’s life. The rules set down by the LORD are reliable and impart wisdom to the inexperienced. 8 The LORD’s precepts are fair and make one joyful. The LORD’s commands are pure and give insight for life. 9 The commands to fear the LORD are right and endure forever. The judgments given by the LORD are trustworthy and absolutely just. 10 They are of greater value than gold, than even a great amount of pure gold; they bring greater delight than honey, than even the sweetest honey from a honeycomb. 11 Yes, your servant finds moral guidance there; those who obey them receive a rich reward.
Nehemiah 9:1-31 Our faithful God, we honor You today for Your patience with us. You are strong and steadfast, faithful and compassionate. You are everything we are not. We are proud and forgetful, selfish and entitled, weak and indifferent. Our story is like Israel’s story, filled with our rebellion and Your mercy. Yet we can never out-sin Your abundant mercy. Forgive us when we fail You every day. May Your Word and Your Spirit convict us toward holiness. Thank You for Jesus, our Savior, and the forgiveness offered in His blood. What cost Him everything cost us nothing. By His wounds we are healed. Amen.
Nehemiah 9:32 – 10:39 Our Father, You are a covenant keeping God. You are faithful to Your promises and You never fail us. Thank You for Your everlasting devotion to us. Forgive us for failing to please You, even when our intentions are good. Forgive us for our broken promises, our wandering hearts, our covenant unfaithfulness, and our spiritual indifference. Convict us by Your Holy Spirit to increase our commitment to You today. We want to obey You out of our vast gratitude for all that You’ve done for us in Christ. We want to serve You, honor You, worship You, and follow You. You are worthy. Amen.
Nehemiah 12:27-47 Our Father, You have accomplished so much in our lives and in our church. Today we offer great sacrifices and thanks, because You have given us great joy. Forgive us for taking credit for Your accomplishments or deflecting responsibility for our failures. We worship You in Spirit and in truth today. We want our rejoicing to be heard far away so the world will see our great God. May our worship continue outside of this place of worship as we live for the One who died for us. Amen.
Nehemiah 13:1-22 Our faithful God, You are patient and long-suffering. Your holiness is consistent; ours is inconsistent. You know us inside and out, better than we know ourselves. And while You demand our obedience, You anticipate our sin. Forgive us for our cycles of obedience and rebellion, zeal and apathy, humility and pride. Thank You for Your provision for our sin. Thank You for Your mercy and grace in Jesus Christ our Savior. Because the Son has made us free from sin, we are free indeed. Amen.
Nehemiah 13:23-31 Our Holy Father, You are without sin. You are radiant in Your purity. We live in a fallen world and struggle to comprehend holiness. In this displeasing world, we want to live in a way that pleases You. Protect us from embracing the world’s standards. We know that conforming to fallen humanity displeases You. Convict us to cleanse our hands and purify our hearts. We want to be holy because You are holy. We long for our eternal condition that will enable us to endure and enjoy Your holy presence. Amen.
