The Bible often prescribes a physical practice to remind us of a spiritual reality. “Rest” is such a concept—a practice rarely understood and seldom experienced by Christians. The Bible describes the Christian’s rest as something to enjoy today and also something to anticipate in heaven. The concept includes confidence and contentment in our relationship with Jesus Christ. And yet most believers are too busy and distracted to experience this rest today. In order to fully enjoy the reality of our spiritual rest, we need to embrace the physical rest the Bible prescribes. By subtracting certain distractions from our schedules, we can add meaning to our lives. By subtracting, we can actually gain. By emptying, God can fill.
