Abstract

I once told my girls that we were going to do something fun as a family. “What are we going to do, Daddy?” I explained that we were going to walk to the neighborhood park, a common and delightful experience for my whole family. “But,” I said. “You’ll have to wait until I finish some chores.” The older of the two thought for a second, and then replied, “Okay, but what can we do while we wait?”

Believers have been promised a delightful encounter with Jesus Christ. We look forward with anticipation to the day when we will see Him face-to-face. In the meantime, we wait. “Okay,” you say. “But what can we do while we wait?” Jesus answered this question several times, always bringing us back to the idea of watchfulness: Stay alert!
