Abstract

Israel’s high priest represented the people to God. He alone was permitted to approach a holy God and offer sacrifices on the people’s behalf. According to Hebrews, Jesus is a better high priest than any the world had ever seen. For starters, he himself was sinless whereas the high priests before him were required to offer a sacrifice first for their own sins before offering for the people. Furthermore, Jesus’ self-sacrifice was far better than some animal without blemish. What does that mean for me and you? It means we’ve been given access to the Holy of Holies ourselves. It means we can go where no common person has gone before. We can approach our Father’s throne of grace in our time of need—and do so with confidence.
