Abstract

One of the first concepts Jenny and I tried to teach our children was the notion of waiting. Still today, when our children begin to get restless in the car or disenchanted with an activity we try to disarm them by calmly saying “wait.” Believe it or not, it sometimes works! They realize that what they want is just around the corner, and they wait patiently in the meantime.

In chapter five of his letter, James attempts to disarm some impatient Christians who are growing weary of this world. As strangers in a foreign land, they long for the comforts of “home” and the fellowship of their coming King. To these suffering saints James calmly whispers “wait.” What we long for and desire so desperately is just around the corner, and we are being asked to persevere and wait patiently in the meantime.
