How to Speak Properly (James 3:1-12)

Printer-friendly versionSend to friend

Abstract

Training a pet is nothing less than a challenge. It requires tenacity, wisdom, perseverance, skill, consistency, and perhaps a little bit of prayer. A lot of work for something we impose on ourselves! It is not surprising that many choose to hire others to train their pets for them. Likewise, the tongue is something challenging to tame. According to James, it is downright impossible to bring it into submission and control it consistently. Wouldn’t it be great if an agency existed that you could hire to train your tongue? James says the tongue is as unmanageable as a raging fire and as harmful as poison. Furthermore, the tongue is disproportionately influential; it bears tremendous weight for its relatively small mass. Usually this influence is negative, but when managed properly it can wage significant positive force.
