The Gospel as Comfort

Printer-friendly versionSend by email

Abstract

Christians experience several different kinds of suffering. We suffer physically; we suffer heartbreak and loss; we suffer the consequences of a fallen world; and we suffer from persecution. Added together, suffering abounds among genuine believers. And yet the Gospel that saves us eternally is also a living Truth that comforts us in our daily storms. Every religion claims a God who permits His devotees to suffer. Only Christianity recognizes a God who entered that same suffering Himself. We are comforted when we remember that God knows our suffering experientially. We are also comforted when we remember that the eternal suffering that we deserve has been replaced by eternal hope. Take heart, followers of Christ: Our permanent citizenship is in heaven.
