The Glorious Beginning: The Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9)

Printer-friendly versionSend by email

It’s been called “the great sin,” and the seedbed out of which all other sins grow. Pride describes not only the beating of one’s chest to call attention to one’s status or accomplishments, but also the sheer hubris of independent thinking or basking in the illusion of self-sufficiency. Most of our pride is subtle, beneath the conscious level. We silently and privately take credit for certain achievements; we presumptuously make plans that we imagine we can control; we fail to give a passing thought to our Creator God as we engineer great strategies to demonstrate our human potential. And all along, God watches. He sustains our every breath. He protects our every step. He controls our every minute. Our pride is seen clearest in our failure to even acknowledge these simple truths.
