Abstract

God’s relationship to His people was viewed in terms of a “covenant.” The Old Testament centered around God’s covenant with His people. How bold, therefore, for the author of Hebrews to declare that Jesus inaugurated a “new covenant” that would make the “old covenant” obsolete. This shocking news would require the readers to shift their entire outlook on life. The new covenant is described as superior to the old, bringing more benefits to God’s people. The chief problem with the first covenant was that it failed to provide a permanent remedy for the people’s sin. The new covenant, established in heaven, eternally solves this problem.
