Jonah 2

Jonah Prays

1:17 (2:1)¹ The Lord sent² a huge³ fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the stomach of the fish three days and three nights. 2:1 Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the stomach of the fish 2:2 and said,

“I⁴ called out to the Lord from my distress,

and he answered me;⁵

from the belly of Sheol⁶ I cried out for help,

and you heard my prayer.⁷

2:3 You threw me⁸ into the deep waters,⁹

into the middle¹⁰ of the sea;¹¹

the ocean current¹² engulfed¹³ me;

all the mighty waves¹⁴ you sent¹⁵ swept¹⁶ over me.¹⁷

2:4 I thought¹⁸ I had been banished from your sight,¹⁹

that I would never again²⁰ see your holy temple!²¹

2:5 Water engulfed me up to my neck;²²

the deep ocean²³ surrounded me;

seaweed²⁴ was wrapped around my head.

2:6 I went down²⁵ to the very bottoms²⁶ of the mountains;²⁷

the gates²⁸ of the netherworld²⁹ barred me in³⁰ forever;³¹

but you brought me³² up from the Pit,³³ O Lord, my God.

2:7 When my life³⁴ was ebbing away,³⁵ I called out to³⁶ the Lord,

and my prayer came to your holy temple.³⁷

2:8 Those who worship³⁸ worthless idols³⁹ forfeit the mercy that could be theirs.⁴⁰

2:9 But as for me, I promise to offer a sacrifice to you with a public declaration⁴¹ of praise;⁴²

I will surely do⁴³ what I have promised.⁴⁴

Salvation⁴⁵ belongs to the Lord!”⁴⁶

2:10 Then the Lord commanded⁴⁷ the fish and it disgorged Jonah on dry land.
