Jonah 2

Jonah Prays

1:17 (2:1)1 The Lord sent2 a huge3 fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the stomach of the fish three days and three nights. 2:1 Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the stomach of the fish 2:2 and said,

“I4 called out to the Lord from my distress,

and he answered me;5

from the belly of Sheol6 I cried out for help,

and you heard my prayer.7

2:3 You threw me8 into the deep waters,9

into the middle10 of the sea;11

the ocean current12 engulfed13 me;

all the mighty waves14 you sent15 swept16 over me.17

2:4 I thought18 I had been banished from your sight,19

that I would never again20 see your holy temple!21

2:5 Water engulfed me up to my neck;22

the deep ocean23 surrounded me;

seaweed24 was wrapped around my head.

2:6 I went down25 to the very bottoms26 of the mountains;27

the gates28 of the netherworld29 barred me in30 forever;31

but you brought me32 up from the Pit,33 O Lord, my God.

2:7 When my life34 was ebbing away,35 I called out to36 the Lord,

and my prayer came to your holy temple.37

2:8 Those who worship38 worthless idols39 forfeit the mercy that could be theirs.40

2:9 But as for me, I promise to offer a sacrifice to you with a public declaration41 of praise;42

I will surely do43 what I have promised.44

Salvation45 belongs to the Lord!”46

2:10 Then the Lord commanded47 the fish and it disgorged Jonah on dry land.
