On this page we want to spend some time to share our heart and our plans to better serve you our users and that can’t be done in 1 or 2 screens.
Hopefully it is brief and interesting enough that you will understand our vision to see Christians become mature and effective in the global economy so we all see the Great Commission completed in one generation.
Earlier we stated :
1- Why does bible.org exist?
We exist to freely share the good news from God to the entire world so you can KNOW the Truth about life and eternity. We provide free access on the Internet to the finest, most trustworthy biblical truths and materials. What Truths should everyone know?
- Where did I come from?
- Why am I here and what is the purpose of my life?
- Where am I going when I die?
The answer to these questions and more are found in the Bible where we read "For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through him" John 3:17 and
"since He (God) wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one intermediary between God and humanity, Christ Jesus, himself human who gave himself as a ransom for all, revealing God’s purpose at his appointed time" 1 Tim 2:4-6.
Therefore, bible.org exists to provide everyone free access to the NET Bible and articles that answer these questions.
2- Why do you give the NET Bible away for free? How do you pay your Bills?
When Jesus sent his disciples out to the “lost sheep of Israel he told them. “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give. Do not take gold, silver, or copper in your belts, no bag for the journey, or an extra tunic, or sandals or staff, for the worker deserves his provisions.” Matt 10:5-15 Also in Lev 23:22 it says “When you gather in the harvest of your land, you must not completely harvest the corner of your field, and you must not gather up the gleanings of your harvest. You must leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the LORD your God.”
We think Christ’s example in Matthew10 and the example in Lev23 is sufficient instruction to us to have a "Ministry First" mindset not a "profit first" mindset and to trust that God will raise up Christians who will support us as they did in Matthew10. We also believe that we should run the ministry with the highest efficiency so our donors tax deductible ministry dollars are used for on-line ministry expenses not overhead.
3- Why are we focusing on an Internet ministry?
We think that the advent of the Internet is as significant as the invention of the printing press. Why? The Internet can distribute material globally at a faster pace and much lower cost. The Internet allows authors for the first time in history the ability to give everyone on earth free access to the finest, most trustworthy biblical truths and materials.
With this distribution of God’s truths we can literally reach everyone on earth and complete the Great Commission in one generation as Christians around the world make their life count for eternity as they become equipped for global impact and we can reach those who are oral learners and can't read.
Some have asked for our doctrinal page which you can view here.
4- Who are we?
We are a community of Christians who are serious about our faith who want everyone to KNOW the Truth about life and eternity. Our community includes men and women from all walks of life, e.g. scholars, pastors, teachers, parents, and students who have moved from sitting on the sidelines of life, to running the “race of life” making their lives count for eternity by sharing with others what they have been freely given by God. They plan to finish the “race of life” well as Paul talks about in 2 Tim 4:7-8 and Matthew 25:23. The community includes retired persons and those who have outside income allowing them to volunteer their skills. It also includes authors who have donated their life's work to bible.org as a legacy, and authors who give us access to their work so it can be downloaded for free for those who can not afford to buy the same material. Our operational staff is salaried while the executive staff is all volunteer as are many of our part time staff who sacrificially donate their expertise and time. All in the community are your servants and dedicated to completing the Great Commission race with excellence. That race begins by an act of faith, when a person recognizes that they are a sinner and need someone to pay the penalty for their sin. That someone is their Savior, Jesus Christ. It continues as one reads the Bible and understands that Christianity is a relationship with God who gives us the Holy Spirit to help us take our next step in faith and learn more about Christ and His commandment to tell others about Himself and to disciple others.
As we run in this Great Commission race and invest in others, we gain a satisfaction and meaning to our life that makes the gains, in power and riches of this world insignificant by comparison. By joining together, we can accomplish great things for the Kingdom of God and reap the rewards promised in the Bible.
Would you consider joining the bible.org community in this journey/race that Paul talked about? Will you consider sharing your time, talents, monies, and prayers so that when the race is over you to will receive the crown of righteousness and hear the words “well done.”? Matthew 25:23.
5- What does bible.org do?
- We harness the Internet for God
- We provide authors a multilingual Internet pulpit to reach the 2 billion+ users on the Internet and share God’s truths about what “Matters in Life”.
- We recruit authors to fill the multilingual Internet pulpit reaching globe with trustworthy biblical material.
- We distribute the NET Bible in print as well as offer it as a free download to the world.
- In the spirit of Lev 23:22 we develop Bible study tools and provide resources so Christians in every culture can be equipped for global impact
- We lay a solid biblical foundation for the next generation (children’s ministry) so they can impact the globe for Christ
And we develop projects to implement the reason we exist
6- Projects
The following are top level projects descriptions that support the above statements of Why Does Bible.Org Exist? How Do We Think? and What Do We Do?
- Develop a modern Bible translation "NET Bible" that is freely available to the poor and foreigners around the world in the spirit of Lev 23:22 . The NET Bible includes over 60,000+ footnotes that help explain scripture in today's English.
- Develop a NET Bible version in Chinese for the billion+ Chinese
- Open up the NET Bible for translation into other languages of the world
- Develop www.bible.org as a multilingual Internet pulpit reaching the globe and invite authors to develop trustworthy biblical content to freely share with the 2 billion+ users of the Internet, so they can be equipped for global impact and fulfill the great commandment of Christ.
- Develop tools, Bible readers etc for the web, mobile and other platforms used by the world’s population
- Not everyone in the world can read. Therefore, to complete the Great Commission we need to partner and assist others in the development of audio and video biblical material and distribute it to the oral learners around the world.
- We will also be a servant and partner with churches and like minded ministries. It is bible.org's desire to help people develop Faith Communities that produce lasting personal relationships that result in Christians actually Caring for each other as Christ commands us to do 1 John 3:23; Heb 10:24,
- We will work with the church to turn spectator Christians into active Christ centered “Ministry First” laborers. Matt 9:37-38 willing to make their life count for eternity and complete the race in this lifetime a winner in Christ’s eyes. 2 Tim 4:7-8.
- We will also provide better tools and opportunities for people around the world to know Christ and have a greater impact, for Christ, on their world by:
- Getting the the NETBible Word out so everyone is aware that a modern translation of the Bible is a freely available and it has over 60,000 footnotes to help people to understand what God is saying in the Bible.
- Develop tools and widgets where churches/other ministry sites can transparently host the NETBible and its advanced search and study tools on their site.
- Continue to add ministry partners so we can add even more on-line Bible studies that help Christians mature in their faith and become active and more effective in ministry, giving their time and talents to complete the Great Commission and to serve others.
- Work with the millions of users of Bible.org sites and other ministries to develop a open ministry framework where churches/other ministry sites around the world can share content and methodoligies to engage a billion people sharing Christ and involved in finishing the Great Commission in one generation.
- Quantify the items from our core values such as the “Ministry First” set of values.
- Establish a book printing and publishing entity (NET Bible Press), as a for-profit company. This represents the first tent-making activity. These for-profit tent-making activities will be separate from the non profit bible.org foundation and will exist to generate the necessary funds that bible.org needs to continue the development and Internet distribution of quality content and services.
- Open up a channel for donations that will become an additional source of monies that will continue to support the development and free distribution of new content and translations of the NET Bible and critical studies into the languages of the world with a million or more speakers.
- Develop a framework where bible.org can recruit and add staff for specific projects using the tentmaker funding mechanism or accepting new staff that is capable of raising their own support team.
- Ensure all activities, staff and volunteers are covered with prayer and prayer teams.
- Operate the bible.org organization as a model for other Christian ministries: willing to partner and share techniques, technologies, doing good for all involved and demonstrate an efficiency , an effectiveness and financial integrity based upon Biblical principles without the reliance on today's marketing hype.
@@@ review below 10/8/2010
1.2 Our core values
- Do All as unto Christ— Being accountable to God and one-another for our actions in ministry
- “Ministry First” — Develop quality content that is available to ALL people groups of the world, independent of national or monetary status
- An attitude of serving one's neighbor—Include opportunities/requirements to go into the mission field (sabbatical) to clone/share skills
- Productive volunteers of today are supported staff of tomorrow
- Maintain both an effective and an efficient ministry, where donor's monies are applied to ministry and indirect overhead costs are supported by tent-making activities of sponsors and friends.
- A personal Prayer Life
The following example scripture references support our vision, goals and core values:( Matthew 6:19-21 ; Acts 20:32-35 ; 1 Thess 2:9-11;2 Thess 3:8; Leviticus 23:22 ;Romans 14:12; Luke 14:12b; 2 Tim 2:1-2 )
2.0 In 2001 “Ministry First” Christian publishing model passes the test —
Many had thought that one couldn't build a successful Christian ministry on the premise of “Ministry First”. They argue that one has to first build value in the organization as has been done in more traditional Christian publishing ministries. In 2001 bible.org demonstrated that “Ministry First” is practical as it delivered million Bible studies to 173 Countries. Also in 2001 bible.org attempted an implementation of our vision to take good quality studies and translate them into foreign languages. Our initial approach was to use paid Christian translators overseas, but bible.org had several unfortunate engagements where overseas. Christian missionaries were sent money or computers as payment and never translated anything at all. It proved difficult to predict the quality or intentions of potential paid translators. However, it found that volunteers, unlike their paid counterparts, were very productive and produced far higher quality translations. In retrospect, this makes sense, as those who have pure hearts see the urgent need for native speakers of their language to have quality Biblical studies materials and make it their personal ministry. Since each translation is used by millions of users, few ministry opportunities represent such a huge opportunity to serve the Body of Christ. bible.org encourages you to
check out the translation formatting guidelines, volunteer your language skills, tell your bilingual friends, and if you don't know another language - we ask you to encourage the volunteer translators by thanking them.
3.0 In 2009
3.1 We upgraded the site to improve an already great product - the trustworthy Biblestudy resources you have come to rely on @ bible.org. Below are few changes that we have implemented.
- Offer better support for our mission boards and the missionaries serving across the globe with an enhanced language capability.
- Showcasing best of breed articles in key topic areas in order that they may be translated into multiple languages. This will we better serve our volunteer translator and highlight their efforts for the kingdom.
- Superior Bible reference indexing: Articles are now available and indexed by verse and verse range not just Book and chapter
- Enhanced Registered User Profiles
- "My Library" bookshelf: Registered Users can add an article they are reading to their "My Library" bookshelf and it will remember it when you return to the site. Users can choose to make this library public on their profile.
- Networking Churches through bible.org: Please provide us information about your church and the URL of your church website. We are working on being able to place your church on a map and help people looking for a church in your area find you
- Networking ministers through bible.org: We are also asking for you to tell us about your roles/responsibilities in a church. This will help us understand the needs of our registered users and from this and other user communications we will create reading rooms, special offerings which highlight articles and products that might help you in that role.
- Enhance the ability to interact with others in the bible.org community. We will initially turn on the ability to see how many are on line and who else is on line (We will experiment with how best to ask a question to those on line for help or discussion on a problem. Perhaps a "shout box" or something.
3.2 Launched a site that will allow users to share; their studies, power-points, sermons etc. This site http://users.bible.org is more along the lines of what is called a web 2.0 "social networking site" where we have a rich topic index and we hope to build it so that it highlights the best content on the web per that topic. (If you would like to help build this let us know)
