Abstract

Everyone reading this abstract has something in common—we all live in the 21st century. Although this is obvious, the profound impact it has on how we read and understand scripture may not be. One reason that it is difficult to recognize the influence of the time in which we live is that everyone we speak with is also from the 21st century.  Therefore, today we will take a step back in time and see how those who have gone before us understood some familiar statements of Jesus. My hope is that as we see how it radically impacted their lives, that the early Christian martyrs will encourage us to live lives that radically glorify God. Key passages: Luke 9:23-26, I Peter 2:21-23, Luke 23:26-31
