There is nothing more counter-cultural today than a person who does not complain. Find one, and you’ve found a rare and precious person. And you probably like to be around them. Complaining is a disease that we can easily diagnose in others but often remains hidden in our assessment of ourselves. No one likes a complainer, and most of us are complainers. We just don’t know it. The Bible consistently refers to complaining as sin, and the Apostle Paul writes from prison that we should do all things without grumbling or complaining. Surely if he could turn his complaining into rejoicing under his circumstances, we can find something in which to rejoice under our circumstances. Doing so promises to make our light shine bright in this dark world.
