1.3 Improving Navigation by Tagging
- The Project proposal has been approved (see description below)
- We have set up a section on the forum for the use of volunteers to interact on various tasks see section 7-Bible.org Volunteer tasks and community Discussion
- We have added an issue tracker to the Bible.org ticket system. To use it simply click "report a problem/suggestion" on the article you are tagging, select "Tagging Task" as the tracker, subject: Tagging, insert the tags suggested under the link to the article separate by commas. Then click save.
- Additional Help needed: Yes, the project is looking for testors, people who can read the articles and critique the machine tagging and add tags, people with ideas on how to do the job better and people to write user documentation Contact the volunteer coordinator Note you will need to be logged on to use the contact form.

Project name___Improving navigation by tagging______ and description (summary)
Tagging as a Navigation aid- As more and more content becomes available on Bible.org and the Internet in general, the user needs better tools to aid in the location and rapid assessment of articles as to their answering what the user is searching for. This project will be both a research project and an implementation project investigating ways to improve the location and assessment of vast quantities of material for users. It will attempt to harness the wisdom of the entire user Bible.org population to find “methods that work”. The Initial work will be in the following areas
-
Making better topic/key word lists for articles experimenting with more than one topic vocabulary (For example: 1-a formal site controlled, 2- machine generated/user recommended)
-
classifying articles for “what is the spiritual maturity level” of the targeted reader e.g 1-non-Christian (seeker/benign/antagonist) , 2-new Christian, 3-practicing Christian, 4-Christian leader, 5-scholar
-
Pedigree/trustworthiness: many readers what to know if the teaching of an article can be trusted as to it being faithful to the scriptural teaching. We will experiment with various endorsements and user comments We are considering setting up a separate site that will allow anyone to post and share material.
-
“Valuable to me” Most users are looking for articles that a valuable to themselves. Understanding what are some things we could measure and report that will help one locate such articles would be useful Perhaps a reader feedback rating system (1-5) where the readers reported if the article was useful and would they recommend it to others
-
Other to be identified in the research segment of the project. (possibly do a similar tagging across the whole Christian Internet.

Describe the Need/Requirement
- As we add more and more content we need to improve the ability of users to find the appropriate article. We expect that people will want to find articles by bible passage and by topic or key word. We plan to improve this and give our users the ability to suggest topics for articles that we may have missed.
- Also we need to tag articles by spiritual maturity level of the reader e.g
- 1-non-Christian, (seeker/benign/antagonist)
- 2-new Christian,
- 3-practicing Christian,
- 4-Christian leader,
- 5-scholar. If an articles is targeted to the new believer or a post seminary reader that should more apparent. We also want to add a pedigree/trustworthiness tag: many readers what to know if the teaching of an article can be trusted as to it being faithful to the scriptural teaching. To make progress on this requirement we will experiment with various endorsements and user comments
- As part of the thrust to increase content available to our community, we are considering setting up a separate site that will allow pastors and authors to post and share material with others with some mechanism of tagging the pedigree/trustworthiness of content available to the community.
-
Describe the Benefit to the community of users
- more quickly find articles that relate to what the user is looking for and one that is writen to the users biblicial understanding level
-
Project description (detailed but not more than a page)
- This will require some special software to generate the machine tagging.. but equally as important some interaction with users on how best to interface with them to make it easy for them to help get better tags to enhance the user experience. Someone with a good understanding of Graphical User Interfaces would be good to add to the team
-
Estimate of the resources required to begin and the time to complete (if known).(including estimates of additional bandwidth costs). The name of any volunteers that are interested in working on the project and any sponsors or funding that has already been identified as available to the project
-
estimate of 1 man-month (mm) to get some initial display running with a 3-6mm to make progress on all fronts and to define the objectives if we expand the effort to include partners and the whole of the Christian web 2mwks/mth will be needed sustain the effort as new material is added.
-
.(the project approval does not include doing the whole of the Christian web but concepts on how to start on that task are included in the project.
-
-
Indicate any meaningful or natural development phases of the project (specifically describe a phase 1 for initial operations and a proof of concept
-
phase 1 get a working model running using the current formal topic list and add a 2nd vocabulary with machine tags as well as user submitted tags keeping visible the "goodness scores" of the machine and the weights of the user contributed tags
-
phase 1.1 write up the lessons learned and put it in the authors guidance.
